Udder The milk gland of the cow, made up of separate quarters. The cow has four teats. The udder comprises the vessel (bag) and the teats.
Ultra low-volume (spraying) An extremely low rate of application of an agricultural chemical.
Ultrasonic Scanning A technique for producing images of body organs, soft tissues and abdominal contents, it can be used for determining the number of foetuses in pregnant ewes.
Umbel A kind of flower cluster (inflorescence) in which the flower stalks (pedicles) arise from the same point, like the ribs of an umbrella, e.g. parsley.
Unallocated See sundry, overheads
Undegraded Dietary Protein This refers to protein in the food that has not been broken down and used by rumen bacteria. This type of protein can be digested and absorbed in the intestines of the ruminant.
Undercut Another name for fillet steak, tenderloin
Undershot A condition involving inequality in the length of an animals jaws in which the lower jaw appears too long (Prognathia).
Undersown A pasture sown with a crop. The crop is harvested and the pasture encouraged to take over the paddock
Understorey Plants growing beneath the canopy of other plants. Usually refers to grasses, forbs and low shrubs under a tree or shrub canopy. cf. overstorey.
Undesirable Species (a) Species that conflict with or do not contribute to the management objectives.
(b) Species of plants that are not readily eaten by animals.
Unevenness Variation in the fineness of the fleece on different parts of the body of a sheep.
Ungulate A hoofed animal, including ruminants but also horses, tapirs, elephants, rhinoceroses and swine. cf. ruminant.
Unit (Milking Machine) That assembly of milking machine components that is replicated in an installation so that more than one animal can be milked at one time.
Unit trust The capital in a unit trust is represented by units, which members buy. The number of units held determines the distribution of net income. Members may be individuals, companies or discretionary trusts.
Universal Soil Loss Equation An equation used for the design of water erosion control systems. A = RKLSPC wherein A = average annual soil loss in tonnes per ha per year. R = rainfall factor, K = soil erodibility factor, L= length of slope, S = percent of slope, P= conservation practice factor and C = cropping and management factor.
Unsecured Loan A loan for which the borrower does not give the lender the right to possess certain assets if the repayment terms are not met; there is no collateral.
Unsecured Notes Loans to a company, usually for a fixed period and bearing a fixed rate of interest, but not secured by any of the assets of the company and therefore ranking, at liquidation, as an unsecured creditor.
Unsound Wool with a tensile weakness. Incorporates both tender and broken wool.
Up in the air When a shearer is moving his handpiece around in the air while shearing, cutting more air than wool.
Urase An enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of urea to form ammonium carbonate.
Urea A water-soluble compound, CO(NH2)2, that is the major nitrogenous end product of protein metabolism and is the chief nitrogenous component of the urine in mammals and other organisms. Also called carbamide.
A common nitrogenous fertiliser.
Usable Forage That portion of the forage that can be grazed without permanent damage to the forage plant species or the other basic resources; may vary with season of use, plant species and associated plant species. A rule of thumb is to "take half leave half".
User-Pays Principle Applies where part or all of the costs of a service are passed on to the users.
Uterus The female organ in which the foetus develops during pregnancy.
