Global Food and Agricultural Business

Quicklinks

Agribusiness is the world's largest industry, employing half the global labour force, controlling half of the world's assets, and accounting for some 40 percent of consumer purchases. Agricultural activities influence natural resource use across vast landscapes, representing the initial links in a long chain of producing, selling, buying and consuming food, feed, fibre and fuel.

The Global Food and Agricultural Business (GFAB) postgraduate programs enable students to develop the conceptual and practical skills necessary for agribusiness management decision-making, marketing, finance, policy analysis and problem-solving in an ever expanding and increasingly complex global food and agricultural marketplace. This is a ‘conversion’ program, aimed at students with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. The program is aimed at both students without undergraduate backgrounds in business or economics, and students who wish more advanced training in business related skills.

The selection of courses enables students to gain fundamental competencies, while at the same time providing the flexibility to tailor their program to their individual background and career objectives. For example, students may focus on specific interests from value chain management or marketing to natural resource issues or agricultural policy analysis.

Program Structure:
The masters program includes a general 48-unit program with four areas of specialisation: Marketing, Trade Policy, Applied Finance and Management. The basic program involves 6, 3-unit foundation courses (3 courses in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine and 3 courses in the Business School). The program also requires a 12-unit applied research project. Elective units and internship units form the remaining course requirements. Students complete courses specific to their major area of specialisation. Prospective students have the opportunity to apply for the 12-unit Graduate Certificate and the 24-unit Graduate Diploma in the General GFAB program.
