Australian University Crops Competition

Three University of Adelaide students competed at the recent Australian University Crops Competition.

They are Thomas Copely – 2nd year BSc(AgSc) student, Wayne Mattschoss – 2nd year BSc(AgSc) student and Michael Noble – 3rd year BAg student. Of these three students, Michael Noble came 2nd in the competition!

University students and lecturers from across Australia participated in a three-day agricultural learning event at Temora in the NSW Riverina. The event culminated in the  inaugural Australian University Crops Competition (AUCC). The competition has been designed for students to gain a greater understanding of the industry, outside of the existing curriculum.

If you would like to know about the Agriculture degrees on offer at The University of Adelaide, please go to Find a Program on our website.

School of Agriculture, Food and Wine Annual Postgraduate Symposium

Prize-winners and acknowledgements

The 2nd School Postgraduate Symposium (22 September and 23 September 2009) provided a forum for “mid-candidature” students to present their research in a friendly and supportive environment. The standard of presentations was excellent overall and it was great to see the breadth of research being undertaken. Discussion was lively and participants made the most of the opportunity to network, as shown by the buzz of conversation during breaks.

Congratulations to Emma Shattock!

emma shattock receiving awardUniversity of Adelaide student Emma Shattock has won the inaugural Ron Pollard Undergraduate Scholarship Award. The award was established in memory of the late Ron Pollard, NSW producer and former president of the Pork Council of Australia.

Raised on a mixed sheep and cropping property in the mid-north of South Australia, Emma developed an interest in nutrition while working with cattle for the Royal Adelaide Show during high school. She is now about to enter her third and final year of a Bachelor of Science (Agricultural Science), majoring in livestock science. Emma said the award will assist her in gaining further insights into livestock nutrition.

The award was presented to Emma at a ceremony held at APL headquarters in Canberra on the 13th February 2009. It was presented by members of the Pollard family – son Ean, Ron’s widow Faye and Ean’s wife Janine.
