Overview

The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine is committed to providing a first aid service to staff, students and visitors. This procedure aims to satisfy, in a practical way, the standards set out in the S.A. Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations Act 1995, and the first aid policy and procedures of the University of Adelaide. The regulations and University policy shall be the final authorities on any matters in question.

Scope

This procedure applies to all School staff, students and visitors.

First Aiders within the School

Numbers
The School will appoint "Designated First Aiders" (DFA) at a rate of two per fifty staff and full-time students (Ph.D., M.Sc. and Honours). In recognition of the fact we have a large number of undergraduate students in our "care" at any one time we will encourage additional persons, who are interested in learning first aid, to take the course. The costs for courses will be met by the school.

Procedure If Injury Occurs

Seek out the nearest first aider or enlist help to do so. The School's Designated First Aiders are listed on each First Aid Box. All First Aid qualified staff / students are listed below.

First Aid Boxes

First Aid boxes are located in the lift lobby of each floor.

Functions: Designated First Aiders

To apply basic first aid to the sick and injured person as required.

  • To maintain the contents of a first aid kit in accordance with instructions in this procedure (if they are assigned one of the three first aid kits).
  • To ensure that notices are displayed giving the names, locations and extension numbers of nearby First Aiders.
  • To record all treatments and descriptions in accordance with instructions in this procedure.
  • To participate as an active member of any emergency preparedness team.

The School and the First Aider will notify the the OH&S Unit to ensure all formalities required by University policy are completed.

Designated First Aiders Duty Roster

Designated First Aiders are on duty at all times when attending the department both during and outside normal hours. The department aims to have a minimum of one Designated First Aiders in the department in normal hours.

First Aid Kit

A Designated First Aider may have responsibility for a First Aid Kit. Items will be issued from the first aid kit only by the Designated First Aider during normal hours. The contents will be checked against a log every month.
Contents of the First Aid Kit:

  1. 5 sterile packets each containing 5 gauze pieces (75mm x 75mm);
  2. 1 BPC wound dressing (No. 15);
  3. 3 sterile wound dressings, non-adherent, small;
  4. 1 sterile wound dressing, non-adherent large;
  5. 3 conforming cotton bandages (50mm);
  6. 3 conforming cotton bandages (50mm);
  7. 1 conforming cotton bandage (100mm);
  8. 1 triangular bandage (minimum width 90 mm);
  9. 1 roll hypo-allergenic, non-stretch adhesive tape (25mm x 2m);
  10. 50 adhesive dressing strips, independently wrapped;
  11. 10 disposable wound cleaning swabs (1% cetrimide BP);
  12. 15 ml providone-iodine 10% solution;
  13. 5 pairs latex disposable gloves;
  14. 1 approved resuscitation mask;
  15. 1 pair scissors (sharp/blunt points);
  16. 1 splinter probe/remover
  17. 10 alcohol swabs (70% ethanol or methanol) for instrument disinfection;
  18. 5 safety pins;
  19. Recording book and pencil for recording injury and illness first aid;
  20. "First Aid Instructions" leaflet issued by Workcover Corporation;
  21. Chloride disinfeciton solution (for disinfection of blood contaminated surfaces);
  22. Accident/Incident Report and Investigation Forms (yellow cards);
  23. Analgesic tablets (only to be dispensed by designated first-aider);
  24. Burns module.

All items will be replaced as soon as possible after use. Kits when left for out-of-hous use will not contain analgesic tablets.

 


 

Documenting First Aid Treatments

A First Aid Register must be kept by each first aider, it will be the responsibility of each Documented First Aider to ensure it is correctly filled out. The Register will have non-removable pages with the following headings:

  • Date;
  • Name;
  • Date and time of injury;
  • Date and time reported;
  • Type of injury;
  • Management of treatment;
  • Referred to;
  • Printed name of First Aider;
  • Signature of First Aider;

All records must be kept for 3 years. It must be remembered that these records may have privacy implications.

Accident/Incident Reporting

Forms

The yellow form must be filled out if the injury was caused at work and by work procedures (i.e. if it was caused by a rubbing shoe or such like problem bo not report on this form).

Notifiable Incidents

Government legislation requires that accidents/incidents, above a certain level of safety, must be reported to the Workplace Services division of he Department for Administrative Services as soon as practicable and a written report within 24 hours. All accidents and incidents above the trivial must be reported to the safety coordinator immediately. If he is not available the the Deputy School Safety Officer or the School Manager. If all these persons are not available report to the University OHS Unit.

First Aid Training

The following training will be required for Designated First Aiders:

(i) Senior First Aid Certificate;
(ii) Annual refresher course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Professional Indemnity

Designated First Aiders must only provide first aid to a level that is consistent with their training.

After Hours Work

Designated First Aiders can only be provided 8.45 am - 5.06 pm Monday - Friday. Supervisors, staff and students must recognize that fact and arrange that only low risk tasks are carried out out of those hours. A first aid kit is available for these periods (see above). All staff using it must report that use as soon as practicable.
