Risk Assessments & SOPs - Why?
Risk Assessments(RAs) and Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) are an integral part of the work we do. Before commencing any task for the first time or use a piece of equipment for the first time, it is imperative that we make sure there is a risk assessment for it. If you see something that is unsafe or feel could be potentially harmful; you need to make sure there is a Risk Assessment available.
A Risk Assessment provides us with a list of potential hazards relating to a process, chemical, piece of equipment etc and gives us the controls to be able to manage those hazards and reduce the risk to you and your colleagues.
Safe Operating Procedures give us instructions on how to perform tasks, use a piece of equipment or a chemical safely. Where there is risk involved, a Safe Operating Procedure is required.
Should a Risk Assessment or SOP not be available for any relevant item, it is the responsibility of the Group Leader/Supervisor to complete this process.
The University also conducts training on Hazard Management which includes completing a risk assessment. Go to the University Training Web Page and enrol for the Hazard Management training session.
Once you have completed your Risk Assessment or SOP, forward it to the School HSO for review and upload to the register.
If you have any risk assessments or safe operating procedures that you would like added to the risk register, email the School HSO.
