Crop Breeding
Crop Breeding
The Waite Campus has historically been a centre of excellence for plant breeding in Australia. The University of Adelaide is the major shareholder in Australian Grain Technologies Pty Ltd (AGT), which is one of the world’s largest wheat breeding programs. The Waite Campus is also headquarters for the durum breeding program and the national faba bean breeding program, while the University of Adelaide barley program is one of the largest integrated breeding and research programs in the world. Varieties from these programs dominate commercial crop production in South Australia and are also widely adopted across Australia, representing a significant market share of national crop production. The integration of commercially focused plant breeding with leading research in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine has facilitated the breeding programs becoming internationally recognised leaders in the application of new technologies to plant breeding outcomes. The continuum from basic research to variety commercialisation also provides an ideal environment for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in plant science and allied disciplines.
