Plant Nutrition & Functional Food Science

Food Programs Food Programs The overall aim of our research is to understand how nutrients work in plants, animals and humans so that we are in a better position to design intervention trials and base recommendations on a sound biochemical understanding of mechanisms. Our research aims to contribute to improving human nutrition by harnessing the powers of agriculture and nutrition research. The plant nutrition and functional food science cluster has a close association with the extensive plant breeding research groups within the School of Agriculture, Food & Wine. The overall rationale for our research is that improvements in nutritional status will optimise health outcomes and have beneficial effects on quality of life and reduced whole of life health care costs. Randomised controlled clinical trials with sufficient numbers to assess clinical efficacy is our main research tool.
